Split-Rail Fencing That Can Be Used for Large Dogs

Keep your dog inside your yard to maintain good relations with your neighbors as well as to ensure its safety. You can do this with any number of fencing options, but many people prefer to keep their view open and unobstructed. Split-rail fencing is the ideal solution for a basic, freestanding fence that will keep large dogs in the yard, and it has a number of advantages, including being simple to construct and suitable for building on hard or rocky ground.
  1. What is Split-Rail Fencing?

    • Split-rail fencing is made from wooden posts joined by split, wooden cross rails. Farmers use it frequently for horse paddocks and livestock pastures, as the animals are too big to get through the spaces. The wooden rails are sold as round poles or are split in half. Lengths range from 8 to 11 feet. They are held in place on posts of 3 to 5 feet in height. The rails have a rustic appearance, do not obstruct the view and work well in combination with other fencing options. This makes it a common choice for landscape professionals to use for decorative purposes.

    Benefits

    • This type of fence is relatively inexpensive to install, depending on the number of cross beams used. It takes approximately half the wood of a privacy fence the same size and is simple to erect. The cost of the fencing is around the median between the cost of a solid fence and cheaper, "fabric" fences. The split rails used for fencing are solid pieces of wood, and even if you use only one or two cross beams, the fence will be sturdy. The "open" nature of the fence means it does not obstruct your view as much as a privacy fence would.

    Disadvantages

    • Use as many cross rails as necessary to close up gaps enough to prevent your dog from getting under or through the spaces. The fencing works well for big dogs such as Great Danes, mastiffs, German shepherds, greyhounds, Labradors and golden retrievers. A slim or agile dog may still be able to get through, and it is ineffective for smaller and medium-sized dogs unless reinforced with fabric or wire meshing.

    Options

    • Make your split-rail fence impenetrable for agile dogs by using one of several options. Attach additional cross rails to increase the density of the fence. Alternatively, fasten shade or poultry netting to one side of it, stapling it to the wooden cross rails. You will need to secure the netting at ground level to prevent the dog lifting it and squeezing through, but doing so will maintain the open look and feel of the fence.
