Woven-Wire Fence Installation

Building a woven-wire fence has certain advantages. Installed properly, this fencing option serves as a durable barrier that demarcates properties; confines children, pets or livestock; and enhances security. Unlike a barbed-wire fence, a woven-wire fence is safe for children, and is available in a variety of styles, sizes and gauges, allowing homeowners to choose the one that meets their budget and preference.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert stakes along the desired fence line at 16-foot intervals to mark the locations for post holes. Attach string to the stakes to create a taut line.

    • 2

Dig the post holes using a post-hole digger. Divide the desired height of the post hole by 3 to calculate the depth of each hole. Add 4 inches to the resultant figure when digging the hole. To calculate the width of each hole, multiply the width of each post by 2.

    • 3

Spread 2 inches of sand in the base of each hole and level its top. Stand a post vertically into a hole and adjust it so it remains level and plumb. Enlist an assistant to hold the post in place while you pour concrete into the hole, up to a few inches from the top. Follow label directions for mixing water to concrete so you prepare a batch beforehand. Hold the post in the concrete for 10 minutes so it sets, before moving to the remaining posts.

    • 4

Inspect the concrete after 24 hours to determine whether it has cured. Add dirt into the remaining holes until level with the surrounding soil surface.

    • 5

Attach the wire to the first corner post. Cut through the vertical stays of the woven fencing using wire cutters, leaving 12 inches of horizontal wires.

    • 6

Stand the wire upright against the corner post and wind the horizontal wires around it. Loop each wire around the post, and then splice it around itself by wrapping its end around the wire a few times. Insert staples over the wires to join them to the post.

    • 7

Unroll the woven wire slowly and walk toward the next post. Attach a wire stretcher to the wire fencing, tightening it with clamps, until the horizontal wires straighten back to 1/3 of their original position.

    • 8

Attach the wire to the post using four to six galvanized staples inserted at an angle. If attaching the wire to steel posts, twist wire clips securely around each post and fence, using pliers.

    • 9

Clip off the vertical stays at the wire end when you reach another corner post. Secure this corner of the wire fence to the post the same way as you attached it to the previous corner post. Continue the process of attaching the woven wire to the remaining line and corner posts until you enclose the desired area.
