How to Hang Lattice Gates With Hinges

Latticework on a fence or gate gives the privacy of a wood fence with the elegance of a weave-patterned surface. While the construction is different from traditional wood fences, the hanging of the latticework gate follows the traditional wood plank gate-hanging process. To hang the gate, you'll need to attach hinges to the gate with each hinge carefully aligned for an even, upright hanging. Done properly, the gate will swing freely without catching on either the opposing fencepost or the ground.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the hinges onto the edge of the lattice gate to test their mounting positions. You want the hinges placed on the upright that serves as the gate edge in a way that allows the gate to open and close freely within the gate entrance, so move the outer part of the hinge to test for free movement while you hold the gate portion of it in place.

    • 2

Use a chalk line with a plumb bob to hang the line straight down the upright while holding it vertical and then snapping a line down the board where you intend to align the ends of the hinges along it.

    • 3

Use three hinges equally spaced down the length of that gate edge. Hold each hinge with the hinge end aligned with the chalk line. Place a mark along the edge of the hinge to show where you wish to mount it, and through each hinge hole.

Mount the hinges to the lattice gate upright by driving wood screws through the hinges and into the wood of the gate frame. Make certain the wood screws are shorter than the frame depth to ensure that you don't drive the points of the screws out the other side. About 1/4 inch shorter should suffice.

    • 5

Place the gate in place between the fence posts with the hinges flat against the post surface. Position wooden boards and shims beneath the gate to hold it in place while you mount it.

    • 6

Drive screws through the hinges and into the post using the electric screwdriver. Secure all the hinges, then remove the wood.

    • 7

Test the gate's positioning by opening and closing it between the posts. It should swing cleanly and straight. If it doesn't, check the positioning of the hinges, and make any adjustment necessary by removing the screws, repositioning the gate and reinstalling the screws into new positions to provide a clear swing of the lattice gate. Be sure the new holes are far enough from the old ones to hold the hinges -- and the gate -- securely.

Using the electric screwdriver, mount the latch to the other edge of the gate and the opposing fence post at the height desired.
