How to Grow Grapes for Privacy

Before planting the grapes early in the spring, make sure the area you choose is in a sunny location and has a fence or trellis behind the grape vines. Grapes need support to grow on to provide the best privacy. Growing grape vines not only provides privacy, it also gives you fruit to use in making jelly, jam or wine. With the proper care, grape vines will give you a living privacy fence. As the season progresses, the grape vines will grow and fill in the fence.

Instructions

    • 1

Select grapes that are hardy in your area. Read the labels on the grape vines or talk to a professional at the garden supply store. If you are still unsure as to what to grow, talk to your local county extension agent for your area.

    • 2

Till the area to a depth of 12 inches. All the weeds and other vegetation need to be removed from the area, because grapes grow better without competition.

    • 3

Amend the soil with 3 to 4 inches of compost. Incorporate this thoroughly into the soil. Remove the rocks and sticks that you find.

    • 4

Dig holes that are twice the diameter of the root ball and twice as deep as the root ball. Space each hole 8 feet apart.

    • 5

Fill in the hole with amended soil so it is filled two thirds full.

    • 6

Remove one grape vine from the container and position the root ball in the center of the hole. Check the top of the root ball to make sure it is about ¼ inch higher than the ground. The soil will settle beneath the root ball to make it ground level.

    • 7

Fill in the planting hole with amended soil. Firm the soil around the root ball with your hands or feet to eliminate air pockets.

    • 8

Trim the grape vines back to two or three buds per cane. By doing this, you will be encouraging the grape vine to branch out, providing you with more privacy.

    • 9

Water the grape vine with a slow flow as you go on to plant the next grape vine.

    • 10

Repeat Steps 5 through 8 until all the grape vines are planted. Continue to water them to a depth of 16 inches.

    • 11

Lay 3 to 4 inches of organic mulch over the ground around the grape vines. Keep the mulch 1 to 2 inches away from the base of the grapes, otherwise disease could result.

    • 12

Keep weeds pulled to help the grape vines to grow big and thick.

    • 13

Feed the grape vines 10-10-10 fertilizer three weeks after planting. After the first year of growing, apply fertilizer in late April through early May. Apply according to label directions.
