How to Make Molds for Retaining Walls

Building a retaining wall can be a costly undertaking, especially when building with stone. Creating your own stone blocks from a mold can cut your materials cost substantially and will ensure that each block is absolutely uniform. This is not a project for beginners, and patience and skill can yield excellent results.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Center one retaining wall block in a plastic container at least 2 inches larger than the block on all sides. The more space at the sides of the mold, the stronger it will be, but too much excess material can make the finished mold rigid, which makes taking the molded blocks out more difficult.

Mix the liquid silicone rubber according to the package directions to obtain the correct consistency. This product can be found in craft stores or online.

    • 3

Pour the liquid silicone rubber into the plastic container until it rises above the level of the retaining wall block by at least 2 inches.

    • 4

Allow the liquid to cure for the length of time indicated on the package. Test if the curing is complete by pressing the edge of a coin into the surface. If it it springs back, it is ready; if it leaves an imprint, allow it to cure a while longer.

Remove the mold from the box and remove the block from the mold.
