Stallion Fence Instructions

As herd animal, a stallion must see other horses from a distance to remain happy and content. He must also have fresh air and outdoor freedom. Some areas of the U.S. have fencing laws that mandate how to contain a stallion safely. Each stallion has its own unique personality, but they can display uncontrollable behavior and aggression. A wide array of fencing options exist -- vinyl, wood, pipe, electric, braided wire cable and wire mesh -- each will work when fencing in a stallion if fence height, installation and durability are taken into consideration.

Instructions

    • 1

Install a fence that stands at least 6 feet in height. Make sure the top of the fence line is at least eye level with the stallion's upright head, according to the Purdue University.

    • 2

Run a second fence line beside the first fence line. Space the two fence lines 12 feet apart.

    • 3

Secure board -- either wood, PVC or vinyl -- fencing to the inside of the fence posts to offer greater fence strength. Affix the lowest board of fencing 12 inches above the ground. Run wire mesh fencing all the way to the ground or affix it 8 to 12 inches above the ground. Space fence posts 8 to 12 feet apart for wire mesh, board or pipe fencing.

    • 4

Place a board or pipe that that measures 2 to 4 inches in length across the top of the wire mesh or wire cable fencing to keep the fencing from bending down. The board or pipe will help give the wire fencing more strength.

    • 5

Stretch 10 to 12 electric wires or high tensile wire fencing cables between the fence poles to create an electric fence line or high tensile wire fence.
