How to Add a Light to a Brick Wall

Outside brick walls are prized for their permanence and solid nature, which has always made it difficult to add a lighting fixture to an existing wall. Running electricity to the spot entailed laying conduit, drilling through the bricks and carving out a spot for the receptacle. Solar-powered lights have made it easy to quickly add a security or decorative light to even the most dense brick wall. Lights with the solar recharger on a cable can even be in shady areas as long as the cable can find some sunlight within 10 feet. Most outside lights come with a mounting bracket that attaches to the brick wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate where you want the light and hold the mount in place. Placing the mounting holes over the mortar is best since it is easier to screw a masonry screw into the joint between the bricks instead of into the brick.

    • 2

Screw a masonry screw through the mounting hole into the wall with the power screwdriver. Use a washer between the screw and the mounting plate if necessary to provide a solid mount.

    • 3

Adjust the controls on the light to your preferences. Normally, solar security lights allow you to adjust the sensitivity of the motion detector and then to leave the light on from a period of 30 seconds up to 10 minutes when it detects motion. Decorative lights are often always on, but some do offer more control, with expensive ones often having a remote control so that you can turn the light on and off from a distance or even inside the home.

    • 4

Place the light on the mount and adjust the solar panel in the direction of the sun. If the solar panel is on an extended cable, then uncoil it and mount it where the sun hits it directly.

    • 5

Allow a full day of sunshine and then check the operations of the light to ensure that it is working as it should.

    • 6

Paint the recharging cord to match the color of the bricks so that it blends in with the wall.
