How to Disguise a Tall Outside Wall

Walls that are constructed outdoors can serve a variety of purposes, such as security or blocking the sound from a nearby highway. One drawback to the walls, however, is that they can be an eyesore. Keep the walls in place to serve their desired purpose while disguising them to improve their appearance.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the wall with a color which helps it blend into the surrounding area, or with a mural using a trompe l'oeil, or "fool the eye," technique. This is a type of art that creates a seemingly real 3-D image on a flat surface; for example, you might paint a doorway on the wall that makes it appear to lead to a beach.

Plant ivy at the base of the wall and allow it to grow up the wall, just like the outfield walls at Wrigley Field in Chicago, or the wall beyond centerfield at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. When choosing the type of ivy to install, however, consult your local nursery or county extension office. Some ivy is extremely aggressive and will quickly grow past the wall and into other areas of your yard.

Plant shrubs at the base of the wall. Choose shrubs that will grow tall enough to reach the top of the wall or close to it, and space them far enough apart so that when fully grown, they will hide the wall.

    • 4

Install stone veneer on the wall. Stone veneer is concrete that is cast to look like natural stones; apply it to the wall with mortar to make the wall look like a natural stone wall.

Turn the wall into a waterfall. Build a pond at the base of the wall to contain the water for the waterfall, and install a pumping system to draw water out of the pool and spill it over the edge of the wall along the top.
