How to Build a Ranch Style Fence With Wire Mesh for Dogs

Ranch style fences keep livestock in and work equally well for dogs. Installing a fence yourself will save significant money and cost only a little of your time. With added mesh, Fido will enjoy a safe and secure enclosure. The rustic appeal of this fence makes it an attractive addition to any rural property but also works well in an urban setting. A basic knowledge of fence construction will come in useful with this project as will the helping hand of a friend.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the area where you wish to build your fence. Clean up the area and remove any objects that may be in the way of fence construction.

    • 2

Place a wood stake every 12 feet along the area where you will be installing the fence. Stretch a piece of string across each stake. Adjust the stake until the string is straight. This will be your guide for installing the fence straight.

    • 3

Measure the distance along the fence line to determine how much of each material you will need. You need one fence post for every 6 feet, three fence staples for each post and enough wire mesh to go along the entire fence line.

    • 4

Dig a post hole every 6 feet along the fence line. Each hole needs to measure 2 1/2-feet deep and about 6 inches in diameter. Leave the dirt from the hole on the side for later use. Remove the stakes and string.

    • 5

Place 6 inches of gravel in the bottom of each post hole. This will drain water away from the post and help prevent the wood from rotting.

    • 6

Cut 4- to 5-inch diameter logs to measure 6 feet long. These are the posts for the fence.

    • 7

Place a fence post in the first post-hole. Pack the dirt from the hole around the post. Firmly pack the dirt down around the post using a hand tamp. Repeat with each fence post.

    • 8

Wrap one end of the wire mesh fence around the first post. Hold the beginning of the wire in place by stapling at the bottom, the top an the middle of the post.

    • 9

Wrap one end of the wire mesh fence around the first post. Hold the beginning of the wire in place by stapling at the bottom, the top and the middle of the post.

    • 10

Wrap the wire mesh tightly around the last post the same way you did on the first. Hold the wire in place using staples. Cut excess wire with a pair of wire cutters.
