How to Repaint a Rusted Gate

Repainting rusty gates not only improves their appearance but also helps to protect the metal from further deterioration. However, painting alone isn't all that's involved. Doing the job right requires taking the proper steps to prepare the metal surface prior to painting. Certain gates, such as residential yard gates and those used for horse or livestock paddocks, are manufactured using tubular steel. Repaint your rusty gate by using the proper tools and materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any flaking old paint off the gate with a scraper. Place newspaper beneath the gate to catch the paint flakes as they fall.

    • 2

Wash the gate with a degreasing solution if necessary. Usually, a sponge with soap and water is sufficient to clean the gate prior to sanding.

    • 3

Sand the metal surface using coarse-grade sandpaper. Coarse sandpaper not only removes old paint but also scores the metal, which improves the adherence of the new paint.

    • 4

Wipe the gate with a slightly dampened clean cloth. The damp cloth will pick up any residual dust created by sanding. Follow up with a dry cloth.

    • 5

Apply a coat of primer to the gate. Primer provides extra protection against rust and bonds well with rust-resistant paint.

    • 6

Apply a thin first coat of rust-resistant paint to the gate using a soft bristle paint brush. Keep the newspaper under the gate to catch any paint drips. Allow the paint to dry according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

    • 7

Apply a second coat of paint to the gate. Two coats of rust-resistant paint along with a coat of primer will protect the gate for years.
