Tips on Building Oversized Wooden Gates for Privacy Fences

Privacy fences enclose yards to keep your family, pets and valuables secure. But access to the yard is also important. Oversized wooden gates can allow access for materials and vehicles, as well as guests. Whether you add an oversized gate after building the fence or make it part of the original plans, keep some basic considerations in mind.
  1. Materials

    • Selecting the right materials for a privacy fence's oversized gate is essential. While the fence can be made of whichever type of wood looks best, the gate needs to be light enough to swing freely. An oversized gate made of hardwood might be too difficult to open and close, and will place additional strain on the frame it hangs from. Woods such as teak, spruce and pine are light enough to make a gate that is both large and relatively lightweight.

    Positioning

    • The best place to position a privacy fence gate is between two sturdy posts. It's also important to place the gate in an accessible location where you can use it to enter from another part of the yard, give vehicles access from the driveway or stay clear of trees and other landscaping elements that you want to retain. Create diagrams of your yard to determine the best place for an oversized gate before you begin construction or buy materials.

    Layout

    • The operation of the specific gate you choose is another important consideration. An oversize gate can swing into the yard, or outward. Measure the space that the gate will swing through to make sure it will open freely. One way to add a large gate to a cramped space is to use a double-door style, which allows you to use only one side of the gate most of the time but open the second side when you need to move large objects in and out of the yard. Each individual gate will need less clearance and also weigh less than a single, large gate.

    Security

    • Many of the advantages of a privacy fence come from having neighbors in close proximity to your home. A privacy fence keeps them from seeing into your yard or accidentally crossing onto your property. It also keeps your possessions safe and out of sight. If you have the need for a privacy fence, you may also want a secure, locking gate. Consider a gate with a key lock or add a chain and padlock to lock up the yard when you leave home or overnight, to deter intruders.
