How to Hang an Oversized Gate Onto a Fence

Hanging a patio gate for an opening less than 4 feet wide is a simple process because you use basic hinges and the gate doesn’t weigh much. But when you hang a longer gate, such as one for a driveway, the oversized gate becomes awkward to handle. To make it easier to install a driveway or farm gate, have someone help you with the process. This style gate also uses special gate hinge pins instead of latches to give the gate the support it needs.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the farm gate between the gateposts. Set it on blocks to allow clearance below the oversized gate so it doesn’t drag when you open it. Use a carpenter’s level to ensure the gate is level.

    • 2

Mark on the gatepost where you plan to install the two gate hinge pins. These marks need to align with the hinges that are already installed on the oversized gate.

    • 3

Drill holes in the gate posts for the gate pins. Use a drill bit slightly smaller than the hinge pins to get a secure fit. Depending on the size of the gate as well as the post size, you may drill part way through the gate post or all the way through it.

Insert the gate hinge pins into the holes. Screw them securely into position. The hole in the end of an adjustable wrench provides adequate leverage to turn the pins. Leave the pins with the hook end pointing up.

    • 5

Slide the gate's hinges over the hinge pin’s hooks with the assistance of a helper. Open and close the gate to ensure it is not catching anywhere. If necessary, loosen the gate hinge with an adjustable wrench to adjust it. Tighten the hinge when it is set properly.

Use a fencing staple to attach the gate’s chain to the gatepost on the end of the gate that opens.
