How to Build a Wood Lattice Panel Gate

Pre-made wood lattice panels add visual appeal to a garden gate. If possible, purchase wood lattice made from 1-by-2-inch lumber rather than lath to give the gate the stability it needs. Look for lattice fastened with staples. The staples should penetrate the wood but should not protrude on the face of the panel. You can select lattice panels that cross at right angles or diagonally. Either way, the lattice panel gate should be a simple project for a do-it-yourselfer with basic carpentry skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the gate opening. Subtract 1 inch for the width of the gate. Measure how tall you wish to make the gate. Allow room at ground level so the gate doesn’t drag on the ground.

    • 2

Cut four pieces of 1-by-4-inch lumber the width of the gate, using a circular saw. Cut four pieces of the same lumber the height of the gate.

    • 3

Mark the dimensions of the gate on a piece of wood lattice panel. Remove any staples that fall under the marked line. Cut the lattice panel, using a circular saw.

    • 4

Lay out the frame of the gate with four pieces of the wood you cut in Step 2. Square the pieces, using a carpenter’s square.

    • 5

Set the wood lattice panel on top of the frame you laid out in the previous step. Keep the corners square.

    • 6

Place the remaining four pieces of cut wood on top of the lattice panel to create a second frame. Square the corners. Clamp all the pieces together with several wood clamps.

    • 7

Drill several pilot holes through the top frame, through the lattice and into the bottom frame. Fasten the gate components together with galvanized screws. Remove the wood clamps.

    • 8

Measure the diagonal distance from the top latch side of the gate to the bottom hinge side. Cut a piece of 1-by-4-inch lumber to that measurement.

    • 9

Set the diagonal brace piece in place on the gate. Drill pilot holes to connect the brace piece with the lattice piece. Fasten the wood together with galvanized screws.

    • 10

Attach the hinges to the gate using the screws that came with the hinges. Hold the gate up to the gatepost. Use a carpenter’s level to check for levelness. Mark where the hinges go on the gatepost. Drill pilot holes in those locations. Attach the hinges to the gatepost.

    • 11

Fasten the gate latch to the gate using the screws that came with it. Close the gate and mark where you need to install the catch on the gatepost. Drill pilot holes for the catch and then install it with screws from the assembly kit.
