How to Build a Lift Fence

A common problem associated with chain-link fences is trying to mow around them. Regardless of how close you get the lawn mower to the fence, there will still be unsightly grass on either side. A lift fence has a bottom portion that raises up to allow you to cut the grass beneath it. The top part of the fence is fixed, while the bottom section is adjustable.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the two cylindrical posts into the ground about 10 feet apart. Secure them with concrete, if desired. Dig a foot below the surface around each pole and fill with concrete, but keep the level below the surface of the ground. Cover with dirt when dry.

    • 2

Cut out two portions of chain-link fence. One section of fencing material must match the exact distance between the two posts. The other section of fencing material must be 4 inches longer than this length. Together, they should make the collective height of the fence.

    • 3

Frame the two sections of fence with metallic brackets, attaching it with welding. The brackets can also be secured on the fence in other ways, such as clasps, but these tend to be less permanent.

    • 4

Attach cylindrical metallic sleeves to each end of the longer portion of fence with spot welding. The sleeves must be able to fit over the posts. Only weld 2 inches of the fencing material to the front of each sleeve, making sure the resulting length of fence matches the distance between the two posts. Wait for the welding to cool, and slip this fence and sleeve combination over the two posts, pushing it to the ground. This is the bottom section of the fence that can be lifted.

Secured the other portion of bracketed fence to the top of the posts with clamps. There must be enough space between the bracket and the post to allow the sleeves to be pushed up and down the length of the posts.

Use C-clamps to keep the lower portion of the fence raised when mowing beneath it. Simply attach the clamps below the bottom of the raised sleeve and then remove them when you want to lower it again.
