How to Get Moss Off Retaining Brick Walls

Moss is a hearty plant growth that can exist in a wide range of environments and conditions where there is sufficient moisture. According to Oregon State University, moss can grow in areas ranging from the cold Arctic to hot and steamy tropical forests. Moss spreads through the dispersal of spores and mosses are often referred to as nature's "green carpets." While moss can be aesthetically pleasing in some circumstances, you may want to remove it from retaining brick walls to maintain a clean look. You may also want to remove moss if it begins growing off the bricks and onto other surfaces

Instructions

    • 1

Firmly move the wire brush across the moss back and forth to remove as much surface growth as possible.

    • 2

Mix equal parts water with a brick cleaner concentrate. Pour the solution in a garden pump sprayer.

    • 3

Connect the pump sprayer to a garden hose. If you are using a pump sprayer with its own water supply or pump system, do not connect it to the hose.

    • 4

Spray the water/concentrate solution back and forth over the entire retaining brick wall. Go over the surface multiple times, saturating the moss and brick surfaces.

    • 5

Allow the solution to sit on the surface for a few minutes. Use a regular garden hose to rinse off the solution and remaining moss. Use the wire brush to wipe any remaining moss bits off the wall. Repeat these steps as needed.
