Electric Rope Fence Vs. Hot Rope Fence

Choosing between an electric rope fence and hot rope fence is a matter of personal choice. Both fencing systems operate in a similar manner, with a primary use of containing horses or other livestock. This type of fencing is far less expensive than traditional post and board horse fence, vinyl fencing or wire mesh fence and is also easier to install.
  1. Hot Rope Fence System

    • The trademarked Hot Rope Fence System consists of a one-quarter inch "hot" rope, with six stainless steel conductors for a six strand fence. These conductors give the product a half-ton breaking strength. The fencing remains stable in snow, ice and high wind conditions. The Hot Rope Fence System includes a five-year warranty by the manufacturer. Each rope roll consists of 660 feet of six wires. Customers should purchase the wood post claw insulator or T-post claw insulator to protect the types of fence posts used. The rope corner/end lag pulley is used at the start and finish of fencing runs on wooden posts at corners.

    ElectroBraid

    • Electric rope fencing comes in various designs. The trademarked ElectroBraid fence system resembles yachting rope, and comes in black or white or a black/white combination. It contains copper wire conductors in a double helix, braided into the rope's outer portion. Use either three or four strands of one-quarter inch ElectroBraid for fencing, mounted on electrified insulators on posts. These posts may be vinyl, wood, fiberglass or steel. Space each post between 30 to 50 feet apart.

    Other Electric Rope Fencing

    • Some electric rope fencing does not require end post bracing. Other varieties suit temporary fencing needs, but might not be the best choice for permanent fencing. Spacing, costs and type of posts depend on the brand. Electric rope fencing relies on either battery-powered or solar fence chargers, but that is your personal preference, as most brands can use either method.

    Differences

    • The major differences between the Hot Rope Fence System and other electric brands are the number of strands of fencing. The six-strand Hot Rope Fence System will take somewhat longer to put up and may require additional maintenance, simply because additional strands mean added opportunities for strands to loosen or need other repair. However, if enclosing cattle, goats or draft horses, which might not respect fencing as much as light horses or other livestock, this might be a good choice. Additional strands may also help other animals, such as dogs, from entering the area.
