How to Add a Lattice Privacy Panel to a Block Wall Fence

There may be times when your block wall fence isn’t high enough to insure privacy in your yard. Perhaps the neighbors have made changes that allow them to see in or you have added a raised deck that reduces the effective height of your wall. It can be hard to raise the wall itself, and building codes often won’t allow it, but you can usually add a couple of feet to the top of your wall by creating a lattice privacy panel.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Carpenter’s pencil
  • Drill with masonry bit and 1/2-inch standard bit
  • Level
  • Masonry anchors with bolts, 1/2 inch
  • Screwdriver
  • 3 wooden strips, 1- by-2 inch, 2 ½ feet long
  • Lattice panel, 8 feet long by 2 feet high
  • Wood screws

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any plants or debris that might be clinging to the upper portion of the wall in the area where you are going to put the privacy panel. The panel will fit close to the wall so there cannot be anything on the wall where the panel is going to go.

    • 2

Measure the block wall fence. Mark near the top of the fence where the privacy panel should begin and end. Also mark a point halfway between the two end marks.

    • 3

Drill a 1/2-inch hole in the block wall by the first mark, using the masonry bit. Make the hole 2 inches below the top of the fence. Drill a second hole 3 inches below the first one, using the level to make sure the line between the two is vertical.

    • 4

Make two 1/2-inch holes near one end of each piece of 1-inch by 2-inch board. Drill the lowest hole 1 inch from the end and the second hole 3 inches above that. Center the holes in the wood.

    • 5

Insert a masonry anchor into each hole in the block wall. They should slip in easily but should not be so loose that they can move around.

    • 6

Place the wood strip over the holes in the block wall, lining up the holes in the wood with the holes in the wall. Place the strip so that there is 1 inch of wood below the bottom hole, and 18 inches of the strip sticks up above the top of the block wall.

    • 7

Put a bolt through each hole in the wood and into the masonry anchors. Tighten each bolt enough to hold the wood strips in place. The bolts cause the anchors to expand and grip the wall solidly. Check with the level that the board is vertical, then tighten the bolts the rest of the way. Repeat this process for the other two points you marked on the block wall.

Attach the lattice panel to the wood strips with screws, lining up the top of the panel with the top of the mounted strips. About 6 inches of the panel will be below the level of the fence, which will give the panel stability.
