How to Use a Chain Link Gate on a T-Post

Chain link gates are useful because the mesh prevents most animals and people from getting through. Although these gates are traditionally hung on round steel posts embedded in the ground, often even set in concrete, they can also be hung on other kinds of posts. A metal T-post is convenient because it is quick and easy to set in the ground. All you need to hang a chain link gate on a T-post is the right kind of hinges.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a u-bolt around the T-post where the bottom of the lower hinge goes. The u-bolt needs to be against the smooth side of the post, and the hinge plate on the side with the adjustment protrusions. These will hold the hinge at the correct level.

    • 2

Fit the bottom section of the hinge over the two ends of the u-bolt with the hinge pin pointing up. Add lock washers and nuts to both sides of the bolt, and tighten them securely. The u-bolt, nuts and washers normally come as part of a set when you purchase the T-post hinges.

    • 3

Slide the opening of the chain link gate hinge over the hinge pin. These hinges typically come with chain link gates and will usually be mounted in the correct position on the gate when it is purchased.

    • 4

Put the upper portion of the T-post hinge over the top of the hinge pin, fastening it in place using the second u-bolt and the appropriate hardware. This will make the hinge solid and prevent it from coming apart during use.

    • 5

Arrange the second hinge on the T-post with the hinge pin pointing down. Slide it all the way through the opening on the chain link gate’s upper hinge. Use the u-bolt, nuts and lock washers to secure the hinge in place.

Complete the second hinge by sliding the second section of the T-post hinge over the protruding part of the pin, which will be at the bottom of the hinge. Bolt the metal piece in place with the final u-bolt and hardware to complete the task.
