How to Tie the Bottom of a Fence

Chain link fences are a less expensive alternative to wooden or wrought iron fences. Chain link fence material is available at nearly every home improvement store, as are any replacement parts you might need. If you decide to install your own chain link fence, you want to be sure that you do not overlook one key aspect-- tying the fence material to the posts. If you fail to tie the chain link fabric to the bottoms of the posts, the fence can easily be pushed or lifted off of the ground by wind, animals or children.

Instructions

    • 1

Secure the chain link fence material, or fabric, to the top rail. Tie the top of the fabric to the top rail using the fence tie wires. Space the fence ties every 24 inches. Attach the top of the fabric to the top rail before attempting to tie the bottom portion of the fence to the posts, or else the fence will collapse.

    • 2

Hold the bottom of the fence fabric up against the bottom of the first fence post. Loop a tie wire through the fence fabric and around the post, 1 to 2 inches from the ground. Twist one end of the tie wire around the fence fabric until it is snug.

    • 3

Pull the other end of the tie wire taut with the pliers. Twist the end around the fence fabric so that the tie wire holds the fabric securely to the fence post.

    • 4

Snip any excess tie wire away from the fence using a pair of wire cutters.

    • 5

Attach the fence to the post with additional tie wires. Space the tie wires every 12 inches.

    • 6

Move on to the next fence post. Repeat Steps 2 through 5 above for each additional fence post, or terminal. Attach the fence fabric to the post at the ground first, and work your way up until you reach the top rail.
