Butterfly Latches for Wooden Fences

Butterfly latches are popular for all types of gates, due to their ease of use and spring-loaded design. Best of all, these latches are easy to install and usable on a variety of materials such as chain-link gates and residential wooden gates; however, the mounting mechanism differs between the two types. Commonly, butterfly latches are paired with a spring-loaded automatic gate closer to create a self-closing gate, which is often required for pools and other areas.
  1. Description

    • A butterfly latch is designed to lock automatically when a gate swings toward it. As the gate hits the angled end or "wing" of the front of the latch, it opens. When the gate then hits the back of the latch, its momentum is stopped due to the angle. Springs within the butterfly latch keep it closed so the gate is locked in place. Thanks to this self-locking capability, butterfly latches are popular on a variety of doors, including cabinets, wooden fence gates and chain-link fence gates.

    Installing a Latch

    • You can obtain butterfly latch parts from a hardware or home supply store. When installing your latch, make sure you have one made for your type of fence or material. A butterfly latch for a wooden fence contains a mounting section where you can bolt it into place. The ones for chain-link fences are different and may require welding. Butterfly latches are very versatile and can be used on the top, bottom or sides of a closing door. For a self-closing gate, install a spring-loaded gate closer to maximize security.

    Installing a Wooden Gate

    • Installing a butterfly latch on a wooden gate is simple. Once you have constructed a gate frame, position the gate in the doorway on wooden wedges. First, screw the hinges to the frame. Fit the butterfly latch on the door and position it so it lines up with the catch on the frame. Make sure you have the right type of latch needed for your material and mount it in place with bolts. If the sides of the gate door are too wide, you can sand down later.

    Safety of Latching Mechanisms

    • Butterfly latches, particularly in combination with automatic gate closers, provide a high level of security. Where gates need to stay closed all the time, such as pool gates, the technology is very useful. Keep in mind that though a butterfly latch keeps a gate shut, a child may still be able to reach and open the latch. Other types of latches may offer child protection, while a butterfly latch may not.
