How to Attach Galvanized Fence to Split Rail

Split-rail style fences have vertical posts with slots cut through the post. The rails are designed to be inserted into the slots. Often the fence has three slots per post. This is a rustic style of fence that is commonly seen in rural locations. Sometimes the fence is hewn on the property using trees harvested locally. Frequently the split-rail fence is a short fence standing 36 inches high. Attaching galvanized fencing is common, particularly small animal style mesh, which is installed to the inside of the rail to prevent creatures from crossing from one area to another.

Instructions

    • 1

Unroll the galvanized wire mesh while wearing work gloves. Often you need to cut or unwind restraining wire used to bundle the fence. The fence should reach from the top rail to the ground.

    • 2

Pre-fit the galvanized fence to the inside of the split-rail fence. Wrap the metal securely around the inside of the fence posts so the wire is flush against the rails. Start at a corner and work away from the corner. It is important that the metal fence stays even and flush with the top inside rail. It may fit less well around the posts.

    • 3

Tuck the end of the fence tight to the rails and post at a corner post. Staple it every 3 to 4 inches vertically, close to the end of the metal fence. Bend the fencing around the inside of the post, and staple it again from the top to the bottom. The top should line up with the top edge of the top rail.

    • 4

Stretch the metal mesh across the rail to the next post. Press the fence tight to the rails and to the post. Staple the top and bottom to the second post. Move to the middle of the rail. Staple from the center toward the posts. Staple every 4 to 6 inches, keeping the fencing tight to the wood. Staple each rail the same way.

Return to the second post. Staple the mesh tight to the inside of the post close to the rails. Wrap it around the inside of the post to the next set of rails. Fit the mesh to the post and staple it. Make sure the top of the mesh remains even with the top rail. Continue along the length of the fencing area. Stop and start new sections at posts. Cut off wire ends, and tuck the fence close to the wood.
