How to Convert a Cyclone Fence to a Vinyl Fence

If you have a cyclone fence surrounding your property that you would like to convert to a vinyl fence, fence conversion hardware is available to make that project a reality. You can upgrade the appearance of the metal components of a cyclone fence by covering them with vinyl posts and adding new vinyl fence panels. Measure the distance between the existing fence posts so you know what length vinyl panels to purchase. If you can locate a metal scrap recycler in your community, you can sell the old cyclone fence to help finance this project.

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen the bolts that hold the cyclone fencing to its posts with a socket wrench. This allows you to remove the wire from the posts. Roll the wire up so you can dispose of it later.

    • 2

Remove the top braces that run between each post as well as any other items on the posts. When you finish, all that should remain of the old cyclone fence is the bare posts embedded in the ground.

    • 3

Slide a fence post conversion bracket over a fence post. Tighten the two bolts on the bracket with a socket wrench until the bracket is snug on the fence post about 8 inches up from ground level. Put a second bracket onto the post. Secure it about 4 inches from the top of the post. When tightened, both brackets should align with each other and should be square with the fence line. Repeat this process for all the remaining posts in the fence row.

    • 4

Slip a hollow vinyl post down the cyclone post and over the brackets to steady the square vinyl post over the round cyclone post. Trim the vinyl post to the correct height, as needed, with a circular saw. Use the cut edge at the bottom of the post so it won’t show. Cover all the posts in a similar manner.

    • 5

Place a vinyl fence panel between two posts. Level it with a carpenter’s level and mark the position of the bottom horizontal cross piece on both posts. Drill pilot holes on the posts. Install the panel hangers in that location on the posts using the screws from the panel hanger’s assembly kit.

Set the panel in the hangers. Attach the hangers to the bottom of the panel after drilling pilot holes for the screws. Slide the top panel hangers over the top of the top horizontal cross piece. Drill pilot holes into the vinyl. Attach the top panel hangers to the posts and panels.

Insert a post cap into each of the posts. Secure it with screws from its assembly kit.
