Set the gate posts in concrete by pouring wet cement into a plastic bucket and placing the gate post in the center. Once dry, place the posts into the ground, cemented end first. The exact distance into the ground the cemented end must be buried will vary depending on building restrictions and the size of the fence and gate. Setting the gate posts in concrete ensures the chain-link gate is much sturdier as the posts cannot be easily moved, which may be the case if they are just hammered into the dirt.
Fill the gate posts with sand or stones. In many instances, the gate posts are hollowed steel. Filling the posts with sand or stones adds some much-needed weight to the chain-link gate, preventing it from being easily opened, broken into or knocked down.
Add chain-link fencing or chicken wire to the gate, using pliers to bend the fencing to hold it in place. Optionally, use zip ties or pieces of wire to hold the reinforcement in place. Reinforcing the actual gate and fence, not just the posts, prevents pets from digging under the fence. It also reinforces the areas they jump on most often.
