How to Install a Fence In Cinder Blocks

New fencing spruces up any yard and gives a definite sense of boundaries that can make a home feel safe, comfortable and spacious at the same time. Often new fences are installed to replace old ones, and in the case of an old cinder block fence, new wooden fences can be attached directly to the outside of the old cinder blocks. This project requires a hammer drill, masonry drill bits and masonry screws to ensure a durable and manageable installation, though a regular drill may be used with additional effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Set out the various fence pieces in their intended locations to determine the spacing of the fence material prior to beginning installation.

    • 2

Begin with the most crucial pieces of the fence, such as corners and gates, which have set locations that cannot be altered. Set each fence piece up against the cinder block wall at the desired height and place a carpenter's level on top of it. Once the piece is level, drill holes through the fencing and into the cinder block wall spaced every 2 feet vertically and horizontally so the fence pieces will be connected to the cinder blocks by a grid of screws 2 feet square.

    • 3

Back the drill bit out once or twice per hole to expel the cinder block dust fragments out of the hole. Replace the masonry drill bits if the drill stops making progress into the wall despite multiple tries of backing the drill out to remove fragments. Once all of the holes for a section are drilled, have an assistant hold the fence piece in place and set 3-inch galvanized masonry screws into each hole. Tighten each screw halfway until all have been installed then tighten down the screws completely.

Repeat this process to attach each location-specific piece of the fencing then work outward from these pieces. Once the distance between sections has reached a dimension less than the width of one fence piece, cut a fence piece to fit within the space. Sand the cut edges and install in the same method as the other pieces.
