How to Make a Single-Door Gate on a Concrete Wall

Building a gate for your concrete wall is not difficult. The hardest part of the project comes when it is time to mount the gate onto the concrete wall, and even that is not hard to do. Once you put the gate together, you will need an assistant to help you lift the gate into place and hole it, while you secure the hinges. The average do-it-yourselfer can build a simple, yet functional gate in about an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height of the concrete wall using a tape measure. Place the 2-by-6-by-8 boards on the sawhorses and mark the height of the fence on the boards using a pencil. Cut the boards to the height of the fence using a circular saw.

    • 2

Place the boards at the sides of the concrete wall opening. Drill starter holes through the boards and into the concrete wall using a drill and masonry bit. The hole you drill should be slightly smaller than the size of the bolt you will use.

    • 3

Secure the boards to the gate opening using concrete bolts, a socket and a ratchet. This will form the frame on which you will install the gate hinges and latch. Measure the opening of the gate using the tape measure. Subtract 1/2 inch from your measurement and this will be how wide the gate must be. The height for the gate will be the same height as the side supports, minus 2 inches to allow for ground clearance. For this project, the gate will be 36 inches wide and 48 inches high.

    • 4

Place a 2-by-4-by-8 on the sawhorses and measure 48-inches from the end. Mark the measurement with a pencil. Cut the board using a circular saw. The resulting two boards should be each 48 inches. These will serve as the sides of the gate. Place a second 2-by-4-by-8 on the sawhorses and measure 36 inches from the end. Mark the measurement with the pencil. Cut the board using the circular saw and then repeat the process using the remaining section of the second stud to get another 36-inch board.

    • 5

Lay the four boards out on the ground with the two 48-inch boards at the sides and the 36-inch boards at the top and bottom. Place the two sides over the top and bottom boards. Make sure the corners are square and install two 3-inch galvanized drywall screws into each of the corners of the gate frame. Use the drill and a screwdriver bit to install the screws.

    • 6

Place the remaining 2-by-4-by-8 board on the frame that you just put together at an angle, starting at the top left corner and ending at the bottom right corner. Mark the angles on the remaining board that you will need to cut using the pencil. This board will serve as the support for your gate. Cut the board at the lines you drew using a circular saw. The board should now have angles at each end. Lay it back on the gate frame and install 3-inch galvanized drywall screws into each end with a drill and screwdriver bit.

Turn the gate frame over. Lay the 1-by-4-by-8 boards on the sawhorses and measure 48-inches from the end using a tape measure. Mark the measurement on the boards and cut all at the mark using the circular saw. You will now have eight boards. Place the boards on the front of the gate frame and space them evenly for a uniform look. Install 2-inch galvanized drywall screws in the top and bottom using the drill and screwdriver bit. Place two screws in each end.

Install the hinges on one side of the gate using the hardware that came with the hinges and the Phillips screwdriver. Lift the gate to the wall opening with a helper assisting you. Install the screws to attach the hinges to the 2-by-6 boards that you installed on the concrete wall. Have your helper to hold the gate straight while you install the screws. Open and close the gate several times to make sure there are no obstructions. Close the gate and install the gate latch using a Phillips screwdriver and the hardware that came with the latch. Test the latch to make sure it is working properly.
