How to Install Lattice on Top of the Fence With Metal Poles

Installing lattice to cover a chain-link or other metal-pole fence requires a workaround using two-by-fours as makeshift studs for the lattice. These two-by-fours are installed into the fence, and then the lattice is installed into the two-by-fours for a simple and straightforward lattice fence. This project requires only a drill and saw for tools and can be accomplished by anyone who can hold a drill. Assistants are helpful for positioning the lattice in the proper place and holding it during installation.

  • Tape measure
  • Saw

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the distance from the ground to about six inches above the top of the metal fence. Cut numerous two-by-fours to that measurement. Line up two-by-fours on both sides of the metal fence, vertical and parallel to each other at one end of the fence. Drill 3-inch galvanized wood screws through one of the boards and into the other. Space the screws every 12 inches and tighten them until the boards are completely tightened against each other and held in place by their tightness.

    • 2

Install these boards along the metal fence, spacing them exactly the same distance apart as the length of the lattice you will be installing so that the lattice can overlap on these studs.

    • 3

Position the first lattice so that it completely covers the first stud and ends exactly halfway across the second stud. Predrill holes every 12 inches through the lattice board and into the stud. Attach the lattice to the stud with 1-inch wood screws. Repeat the installation of the lattice boards on both sides of the metal fence to completely hide its presence.

Continue to install the lattice all the way around the fence. Have the lattice boards completely cover any studs at gates and the other end of the fence rather than having them come halfway like on the other studs.
