Position the hinges flat against the gate. One hinge should sit 2 to 4 inches from the top edge of the gate, while the other sits the same distance from the bottom of the gate. Use 2 inches for shorter fences and 4 inches if your fence is taller.
Place a mounting screw from the kit flat against one of the hinge holes located on the gate. Screw the piece in until it sits flat with the gate. Repeat this step with each hinge hole touching the gate. Lay a 1-by-2-by-24-inch board between the two fence posts or gate posts and set the gate on top. This board provides some stability for the gate.
Open each hinge and press flat against the fence or gate post. Thread mounting screws through the hinge and into the post. The kit should include all the necessary hardware for mounting and installing the gate.
Set the latch on the fence. The latch arm, which moves up and down, should sit on the gate, and the immovable part or anchor should sit on the fence post. Set one of the mounting screws against one of the holes in the anchor and screw it into the post. Thread a mounting screw through each of the holes. Depending on the model, it might feature six or more holes.
Close the gate and slide the latch arm against the gate. Position the gate handle so that it sits over the latch arm. Thread mounting screws through each hole in the gate handle and into the gate itself. The latch arm slides back and forth for locking or unlocking the gate.
