How to Install a Chicago Trellis Fence

Chicago trellis fences are an attractive way to effectively divide your property, providing privacy, comfort and a pleasant view from within. These fences are, by definition, somewhat translucent due to their diamond-hole configuration. Though there are a variety of styles and sizes for this fencing, nearly all of them follow the same basic design of posts with trellis sections attached between the posts. The installation process requires basic tools and does not need any specific experience.

  • Tape measure
  • Post-hole digger
  • Gravel
  • Concrete
  • Carpenter's level

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the section of each trellis fence section. Extend the tape measure over the location of the future fence line. Mark the location of each post based on the measurement of each fence section, leaving exactly the necessary amount of space between each post.

    • 2

Dig out a16-inch hole for each post using the post hole digger. Make the hole slightly larger than the post. Set a 3-inch layer of gravel within the hole. Put the post in the hole. Set the carpenter's level next to the post and adjust accordingly to ensure that it's straight. Fill the hole around the post with concrete. Repeat for the rest of the posts. Let the concrete dry for 48 hours.

    • 3

Position a trellis section between each post. Set the carpenter's level on top of the trellis section to position the section so that it is totally level. Drill a hole through the end of the trellis and into the post, using a wood drill bit slightly smaller in diameter than the wood screws. Add additional holes in the trellis and the post, spacing them every 12-inches along the post.

Put a 3-inch galvanized wood screw into each hole in the trellis and into the post. Tighten each wood screw halfway, then tighten them all the way to fully install the trellis section. Repeat for the rest of the fence.
