How to Use Cyclone Fence Wires

Cyclone or chain-link fences use a variety of components to ensure they have the strength required to protect the borders of an area. A fence tie is a thin wire used to secure chain-link fabric to the horizontal and vertical piping supporting the fence. Tension wires are a heavy gauge wire that adds rigidity to the top and bottom edges of the fence fabric. It is essential that both types of wires be installed correctly to ensure they keep an installed cyclone fence strong and secure.

Instructions

  1. Tension Wire Installation

    • 1

Slide a tension band on the bottom of an installed corner post. Spin the band to face the open end toward a second post. Push the threaded end of a 5/16-by-1 1/4-inch carriage bolt through both square holes punched through the open side of the band. Twist a 5/16-inch hex nut three full turns clockwise to thread it on the end of the bolt.

    • 2

Straighten 12 inches of wire from the end of a roll of tension wire. Do not cut the wire. Grip the wire -- four inches in from the end -- with a pair of pliers. Keep the wire on the flat, forward section of the jaws. Twist the handles of the pliers clockwise until the wire has a 180-degree bend.

    • 3

Slide the loop under the carriage bolt. Pull the wire to hook the loop on the threads of the bolt. Twist the short section of tension wire over the longer section. Grab both pieces of wire with the pliers. Turn the pliers clockwise five to six times to secure the wire. Turn the 5/16-inch hex nut clockwise with a 1/2-inch wrench until tight.

    • 4

Unroll the roll of tension wire as you walk toward another corner post. Secure a tension band on the corner post. Leave the carriage bolt loose. Pull the tension wire 12 inches past the holes of the tension band. Cut the wire from the roll with a pair of wire cutters.

    • 5

Push the end of the wire under the carriage bolt. Pull the end of the wire toward the first post until tight. Wrap the shorter wire section around the longer wire section with the pliers. Repeat the process to install a tension wire between all remaining corner and end posts. Install the chain-link fabric per the manufacturer's installation instructions.

    • 6

Slide a tension clip over the tension wire and over the lowest point of the chain-link fence, two inches away from a corner post. Squeeze the ends of the clip together to secure the materials. Move along the fabric, installing one tension clip every 24 inches.

    Fence Tie Wire Installation

    • 7

Bend a fence tie in a U shape. Slide the ends of the tie through the fence fabric and around a fence post. Ensure the bend of the tie crosses over the wire of the fabric. Twist the ends of the tie over each other until the twist sits tight to the post.

    • 8

Cut the wire extending beyond the twist with the wire cutters.

    • 9

Place one fence tie every 12 inches on each post. Move along the top and bottom rails -- if installed -- placing one fence tie every 24 inches.
