Scroll Edging

Scroll edging creates small, decorative fences that mark garden borders or walkways and that keep small animals, birds and other pests at bay. Choose the kind of scroll edging you want in your garden based on its purpose, location in the lawn and the kinds of plants it will be protecting.
  1. Basic Scroll Edging

    • Most basic scroll edging pieces are like the simple 2-foot wrought iron scroll samples offered by The Home Depot or Plow & Hearth. These classic scroll edging pieces are easy to push into the ground, and the durable wrought iron design will withstand wind, rain and other weather elements, even when left unfinished. Most basic scroll edging pieces are flexible enough to maneuver corners and lock together to create a single border.

    Open Scroll Edging

    • Scroll edging pieces that are not enclosed in a symmetrical frame, like the Achla scroll edging sections offered by Wal-Mart and Sears, are another option. These styles of scroll edging may not be right for garden areas open to children or small animals, as pointed or sharp ends are left exposed and they may snag the clothes, hair or skin of anything that bumps into them.

    Symbolic Scroll Edging

    • Some scroll edging pieces are crafted into familiar designs or symbols. The Fleur-De-Lis Edging offered by Plow & Hearth, the simple heart design of the Finial garden fence and the daisy garden fence offered by Outdoor Iron are just a few examples of scroll edging with decorative designs.

    Other Edging Options

    • While scroll edging is a simple, attractive edging option for gardens and walkways, there are other options gardeners can take into consideration. Large stones or lines of gravel can create sight-friendly borders that require little, if any, maintenance or cleaning. Short walls and borders can be built from brick, plastic, timber or a wealth of other materials. You can also try your hand at creating a unique border of your own from items you find appealing and will survive being outdoors.
