How to Attach a Gate Lock to a House

Gate locks are effective methods for protecting your backyard door or any other door from accidental or unlawful entry. These gate locks can also make sure that pets or children cannot get out of the gated area. Installing the gate locks is a straightforward procedure that requires only basic tools and a few materials. The installation procedure requires only few minutes to create a proper and straight final product that can give many years of service. The variety of gate locks available provide, at the minimum, padlock locking access and the more advanced models have locks incorporated into their design.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the gate lock against the gate door and the gate frame. Test the location of the lock by opening and closing the door to make sure that the lock works well in that position. Mark the positions of the lock attachment screws against the gate door and the frame. Remove the gate lock from the gate.

    • 2

Drill holes in each marked position, making sure that the drill bit does not go all the way through the door. Reposition the gate lock back against the gate and the frame.

    • 3

Drill through the gate lock and into the predrilled holes with 1-inch wood screws, tightening each screw only partway into the hole. Tighten all the screws halfway. Once all the screws are partially installed, tighten them completely to finish the installation of the lock.
