Solar Caps for Vinyl Fences

You've invested a significant amount of money in your vinyl fencing, whether it surrounds your garden, pool or horse paddock. Solar light caps on vinyl fence posts produce soft light once the sky turns dark, creating outdoor lighting that doesn't contribute to your utility bill.
  1. Vinyl Solar Post Caps

    • Most brands of solar post caps for vinyl fencing contain one to four light-emitting diode bulbs, along with rechargeable batteries for their operation. The batteries are charged by small solar panels on the surface of the cap. Like all solar post caps, no wiring is required. Solar post caps are available in a variety of sizes to fit all types of standard vinyl posts. You can also mix solar post caps with standard vinyl post caps, using non-solar decorative caps on entrance and corner posts. Solar caps for vinyl fencing are available in white and black to match fencing, and other colors are available as decorative accents.

    Stainless-Steel Solar Post Caps

    • In addition to vinyl solar caps, consumers may also choose stainless-steel solar post caps to adorn the vinyl fence post. The stainless-steel caps are available in white, black, tan, copper, amber or nickel colors. The various stainless-steel solar cap designs complement many styles of outdoor decor.

    Uses

    • Use solar caps for any of your vinyl fence posts. The environmentally friendly, soft lighting accents any area where you have suitable fencing, including the driveway, mailbox, gazebo, deck or walkway. If used on horse fencing, you can do evening checks on your equines if they are turned out in the field without putting on the barn lights. Solar post caps also are available for other types of fencing, such as steel or aluminum. For best results, install solar caps on vinyl fencing receiving several hours of direct sunlight each day. Solar post caps on fences in shady areas will emit little, if any, light.

    Installation

    • Depending on the brand and design, solar caps may be glued, caulked or screwed onto vinyl fence posts. Caps are either interior or exterior, with the former designed to slip inside the post, and the latter mounted on the outside of it. Since vinyl splits easily, take care when installing screw-mounted caps. Drill pilot holes if using screws to keep the vinyl post from splitting.
