How to Apply Wood Fence Panels to Existing Chain Link

A chain link fence is useful for creating a barrier around your yard, but is has a harsh appearance and doesn’t afford much privacy. Adding wood fence panels to the existing chain link gives the area curb appeal and additional privacy. The process is faster than installing a new fence because you don’t have to dig new post holes and use the chain link for support.

Instructions

    • 1

Power wash the chain link fence to remove any debris and dirt from the surface. Pay close attention to the fence posts and the top rail.

    • 2

Measure the height of each fence post on the chain link fence. Cut wood furring strips to these heights. Attach the furring strips to the center of each post with a waterproof polyurethane glue suitable for outdoor use.

    • 3

Measure between the fence posts along the top rail of the chain link fence. Cut additional wood furring strips to these lengths and attach with the polyurethane glue, which bonds different materials tightly together.

    • 4

Line the first wood fence panel up with the furring strip along the first post of the chain link fence. Drive a nail through the fence panel into the furring strip. Apply nails vertically along the fence post at the rate of one every 6 inches.

    • 5

Hammer nails through horizontally, along the fence panel and into the furring strip along the chain link fence top rail. Continue the process of lining up the fence panels and nailing into the furring strips until the fence is complete.
