How to Install Galvanized Fencing

A simple yet sturdy fence doesn't require a lot of time or materials to install. Galvanized wire mesh fencing resists rust and weathering while only requiring a simple fence post frame to hold it in place. The wire comes in various widths, allowing you to modify the height of your fence to fit your needs. These wire fences work well to keep animal pests out of your garden while keeping small pets within your yard.

Instructions

    • 1

Place marker stakes in the ground along the desired fence line, spacing the markers approximately 5 feet apart. Stretch twine between all of the markers to plot out the fence line.

    • 2

Dig a 3-foot hole at each corner of the fence, using a post hole digger. Install an 8-foot fence post in each hole, and then fill it back in with the removed dirt.

    • 3

Dig a 12-inch post hole every 5 to 6 feet between two corner posts, placing the holes along the plotted fence line. Install a 6-foot wooden fence post in each hole, and then fill in the hole.

    • 4

Wrap a brace wire around the bottom of the corner post, twisting it together so it's fully secured. Stretch the wire to the top of the next fence post and pull it taut before wrapping it around and securing it to the top of the post. Repeat for the post on the other side of the corner post, and repeat for each corner post. Brace wires make the corner of the fences stronger and more secure.

    • 5

Lay 2-by-4-inch boards over the top of the posts. Use 10-foot boards for posts spaced 5 feet apart and 12-foot boards for posts spaced 6 feet apart. Nail this board to the top of the posts to form a top rail.

Stretch the galvanized wire mesh between posts, beginning at one end of the fence. Staple the wire to the posts and top rail using a staple gun. Continue stretching and stapling the wire to the fence posts until you reach the end. Cut off the excess fencing with a pair of wire snips.
