Building an Easy Lightweight Gate

As the saying goes, “Good fences make good neighbors.” One way to have your fence, but still be inviting, is with a gate. While traditional gates are made from solid wood and heavy, you can use the same simple structure and use PVC pipes instead to make a lightweight creative gate.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • PVC pipes, 2-inch diameter
  • Jigsaw
  • 4 PVC joints, 90 degree angles
  • Drill
  • 2-inch screws
  • Gate hardware package

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the fence on both sides of the gate, the diagonal from top to bottom and the width of the gate space. You’ll need to buy enough PVC pipe to form a rectangular frame (two times the height and width), a diagonal and enough half-pipes to then fill in the frame that will run from top to bottom.

    • 2

Measure and mark the pipe pieces and cut the PVC along the marked lines with a jigsaw.

    • 3

Form your frame using the cut PVC pipes and the joint pieces. Screw the diagonal piece into two opposite corners for added stability.

    • 4

Secure your gate frame pieces by drilling in one 2-inch screw at each intersecting point.

    • 5

Measure, mark and cut the remaining pipe pieces in half width-wise so that you have long half-circles.

    • 6

Lay the half pieces onto the frame and drill each into every intersecting point with a 2-inch screw.

    • 7

Set the gate onto the fence and mark where the gate’s hinges and latch are to go. Set the pieces onto the gate and mark the drill holes through the pieces. Drill in the pieces with the 2-inch screws.
