How to Install a Galvanized Fence Gate

Chain link, the most common type of galvanized fencing for home applications, is designed to be simple to handle and easy to size and stretch. Once your posts are set and the material is stretched, you're ready to finish your galvanized fence by installing the gate. While the gate may be the easiest part of the fence system, it's important to put it in properly so it stays functional over the long term.

Slip gate post hinges onto one gate post. Position the top latch 8 inches from the top, with the pin facing down. Secure this latch tightly with a 3/8-by-3-inch carriage bolt and nut. Position the bottom latch approximately 8 inches from the ground, with the pin facing up. Secure this latch the same as the top.

Place the gate hinges on one side of the gate's frame. Secure them loosely with 3/8-by-2-inch carriage bolts and nuts, using the socket wrench to tighten.

Space the gate approximately 2 inches from the ground with the assistance of scrap lumber. Slide the upper gate hinge up until it fits to the upper pin and secure the bolt tightly, using the wrench. Slide the lower gate hinge down until it fits to the lower pin and secure it tightly.

Place the gate fork latch on the opposite side of the gate from the hinges. Slide it up and down until you find a location you prefer. Use the wrench to secure it in place with the included bolt.
