Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the vinyl framing, and locate the nails that are keeping the vinyl against the outside of the window.

    • 2

Wrap a flathead screwdriver or chisel in a thin cloth, and slide it underneath the vinyl framing, between the vinyl and the exterior of the house. Gently lift the screwdriver upward to pry the vinyl off the house. Work in small increments, loosening just a little vinyl at a time

    • 3

Continue to loosen the vinyl, using this method until there is a large enough space between the vinyl and the house exterior to slide a nail puller or pry bar into the space. Cover the nail puller or prybar with cloth, and slide it into the exposed opening. Rock the nail puller or pry bar back and forth until the vinyl begins to come off completely.

    • 4

Work down each vinyl strip, prying it up smoothly and evenly. Work methodically to avoid damaging the exterior. Completely remove the strip once each nail has been removed.

    • 5

Set the vinyl framing aside, and inspect the area around the window. Pull any remaining nails or uneven pieces of metal or vinyl out of their attachments, using needlenose pliers. Go over any inconsistent areas with medium-grit sandpaper. Wipe the area clean with a cloth.

Squirt caulking into all gaps or holes created when you removed the vinyl. This includes holes left when you took out the nails. Smooth out the caulking, and wipe excess caulking off the area. Let the caulking dry before attaching any new trim.
