How to Install Lights on a Concrete Block Fence

A concrete block fence looks more like a wall — a single-wide length of blocks stacked 2 to 3 feet high, held together by mortar. If your concrete block fence features fence posts, you can simply install the solar fence post lights on the existing wooden posts. If your fence has no posts, you can still install the solar lights on your concrete block fence, after making a slight modification.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the concrete block fence. Divide the length by eight, to determine the number of solar lights and sections of 4-by-4 fence posts to cut. Dividing the length of the fence by eight will enable you to position a light every 8 feet along its length, where the fence posts would be on a fence made of more traditional fencing materials. Cut the fence posts into 10- to 12-inch lengths using a hand saw or an electric table saw.

Install a wood fence post bracket every 8 feet along the top of the concrete block fence. These brackets are used to mount fence posts on the surface of concrete, rather than breaking it up and digging a hole for the post. Secure the bracket to the top of the fence using concrete anchor or sleeve fasteners. Drill a hole using a masonry drill bit. Pound the outer portion of the anchor or sleeve fastener into the hole. Position the bracket in place and screw the screw through the bracket's mounting hole and into the outer portion of the anchor, using a screwdriver.

Place the solar fence post lights atop the installed 4-by-4 fence post sections. Secure the lights to the top of the fence post section using the mounting screws supplied by the manufacturer. Pre-drill holes in the fence post with a regular drill bit, using the mounting screw holes in the light as a guide. Then insert the screws in the holes and tighten them with a screwdriver.
