How to Make Posts Out of Honey Locust Trees

Honey locust grows quickly in areas where moisture might be a problem for other trees. The heavy, coarse-grained wood looks like red oak with a beautiful coloring. However, like the black locust tree, the distinguishing character of the wood is its resistance to moisture. Landowners use the wood to make fence posts since the tree grows quickly and produces hardwood that splits easily after it dries.

Things You'll Need

  • Chainsaw
  • Steel splitting wedges
  • Sledgehammer
  • Splitting maul

Instructions

Cut the logs into sections long enough for your project with a chainsaw. Typically, a 5-foot fence post needs 2 feet underground for support, making it a 7-foot pole. Shorter fences need less support while taller fences need more support. Plan on one-third of the length of a post being buried.

Stack the logs loosely across each other and off the ground to dry over the summer. The key to their even drying is good air circulation and exposure to sunlight. If you have several poles, you can stack them in a criss-cross configuration for a neat pile that allows plenty of airflow.

Watch the logs to see when cracks start forming, radiating out from the heartwood of the logs. This signals that the wood is dry enough to split easily for posts. Expect this to take at least three months but probably closer to 12 months, depending on the humidity of your environment.

Use steel splitting wedges and a sledgehammer or a splitting maul to break the logs into sections or posts. Hammer several wedges into the wood along the length of each log to split the wood. The log should split almost naturally into five or six sections suitable in size for posts.
