Bleach & Dish Detergent Recipe for Cleaning a Fence

In time, a fence can become quite dirty. If your fence is made from wood, you may also battle mildew or mold since wood absorbs moisture and takes longer to dry out than other fence materials. There are several recipes that work well for cleaning decks that you can also use to clean outdoor fences. After you make your cleaning solution, use a stiff brush to apply it and scrub the fence clean before rinsing it thoroughly with water.

Things You'll Need

  • Bucket
  • Chlorine bleach
  • Ammonia-free dish detergent
  • Oxygen bleach
  • Ammonia-free dishwasher detergent

Instructions

    • 1

Combine approximately 1/4 cup of ammonia-free dish detergent with 1 quart of water to make a good cleaning detergent. Add 1 cup of liquid chlorine bleach. This solution works well to remove mildew or mold from a fence. Be cautious, however, because chlorine bleach can kill or damage nearby vegetation.

Combine 3 quarts water and 1 quart oxygen bleach. If it is a powdered detergent, stir until it dissolves. Add 1/4 cup of ammonia-free liquid dishwasher detergent to make an effective cleaner for cleaning wood fences. Also, since it does not contain chlorine bleach, it is safer for any nearby vegetation.
