Whether building a new fence or replacing an old gate with a wooden one, properly securing a wooden gate to new posts is important. A strap hinge is required for most wooden gates, as wooden gates are heavy. A barrel-style end on the hinge allows you to slip the hinges over or around the post without having to drill a hole through it, as you would on a wooden post.
Measure the post’s diameter where you want the gate placed.
Weigh the gate, so that you know the hinges can support the gate’s weight.
Select a strap hinge with a barrel end that attaches securely to the wooden gate and fit over the metal post.
Place the hinge so that the strap’s end is even with the gate’s edge.
Secure the hinges to the wooden gate. Using a level ensure that they are straight. Place the first hinge at least 6 inches from the gate’s top, and then space the next two hinges evenly from the first.
Slip the barrel ends over the post, or open and clamp them onto the post. Have a friend hold the gate in place, if necessary.
Secure the barrel ends together with the included bolts.
