How to Repair a Rusty Steel Fence

A wrought iron or metal fence will last for decades, but that doesn't always mean it will look great for the duration of the period. If not properly taken care of, a metal fence rusts from constant exposure to the elements. Rust left untended on a steel fence causes corrosion and eventual disintegration of the metal. Repair this eyesore in just a few hours to restore the fence to its original beauty.

Things You'll Need

  • Garden hose
  • Steel wool
  • Fine-grit metal sandpaper
  • Cardboard sheets
  • Oil-based metal primer and paint
  • Natural filament paintbrushes or cup sprayer

Instructions

    • 1

Prep the surface of the fence by spraying with the garden hose. Allow the fence to air dry thoroughly. Go over any rusty areas with steel wool until all surfaces are smooth.

    • 2

Lay down cardboard sheets around the fence to keep paint from getting on the grass or landscaping, especially if you are using a paint sprayer or spray can.

    • 3

Prime the fence with an oil-based primer intended for use on metal. If you prime with a cup sprayer, thoroughly clean out the unit before using it for paint. Use a paintbrush made from natural fibers if you prime and paint by hand.

    • 4

Paint the fence, using an oil-based paint intended for metal surfaces. Paint small sections at a time. A cup sprayer works well for painting fences, but you can use a spray can or just a simple paintbrush. If you're using a spray can, hold the can 8 to 10 inches from the surface of the metal and work from top to bottom. Apply a thin coat to the entire fence. Use a brush to get into areas of curly detail. Let the paint dry for a four to six hours and inspect your work.

    • 5

Lightly roughen the first coat of paint with fine-grit metal sandpaper or steel wool. Apply a second coat of paint to protect the fence and ensure you didn't miss any spots where rust could form again.

    • 6

Periodically paint the fence. In a few years, you may need to repaint the fence to discourage rust. Keep an eye on the fence and paint as necessary.
