Cypress is an ideal wood for a fence because it contains a natural preservative, cypressine oil. It's extremely stable because of its tight grain. Any outdoor fence is prone to being weather-damaged or infested with insects and fungal growth. Cypress is much more resistant to these threats than woods such as pine. It never hurts, however, to give a cypress fence added protection to increase its longevity.
Clean any dirt and noticeable fungus off the fence using a wood cleaner.
Brush water-repellent sealer on all sides of the fence.
Brush any exposed ends of wood to prevent absorption of moisture and to repel bugs.
Brush on a stand-alone sealer, covering all surfaces, including any exposed ends of boards. All sealers are water repellent, but a stand-alone sealer differs from a paintable sealer because it contains a higher percentage of water repellent. Paintable sealers contain less water repellent to facilitate the application of paint.
Paint on to the fence either a penetrating transparent stain or semi-transparent oil-based stain.
Apply a second coat for a deeper toned stain, making sure it's applied when the first coat is still wet. There is a window of 30 to 45 minutes to get the second coat brushed on.
