How to Build a Wood & Wire Gate

A wood-and-wire gate is one of the simplest gates to build and will only take an afternoon of your time to do it. A wood-and-wire gate is the perfect solution for odd-sized gate openings and is strong enough to keep animals either in or out, depending on your needs. Unlike many other gates, very few materials and tools are needed to complete this project.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • 2-by-4 lumber
  • Table saw
  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • Woven fence wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Fencing staples

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the gate opening. You will want your gate approximately 2 inches smaller than the opening itself in order for the gate to open and close correctly.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of 2-by-4 lumber to the desired width size.

    • 3

Determine how high you want the gate to be. Cut two pieces of 2-by-4 lumber to that measurement.

    • 4

Lay the two upright pieces of 2-by-4 lumber on a flat surface, such as a large worktable or on the ground.

    • 5

Lay the top and bottom pieces across the upright 2-by-4 lumber, making the edges flush with the edges on the sides and top and bottom of the uprights.

    • 6

Nail these pieces into place using a hammer and nails. For added strength, you can use 3-inch wood screws and a drill with a proper-sized screw bit.

    • 7

Measure a piece of woven wire fencing to fit your wooden gate frame. Cut the fencing to the proper size using the wire cutters.

    • 8

Lay the fencing over the wooden frame, stretching it flat.

    • 9

Attach the woven wire to the frame using fence staples and a hammer. The staples should be attached every 2 to 4 inches for stability.
