How to Add Height to an Existing Chain Link Fence Post

Chain link fences are inexpensive, durable and very common. They are also often easier to modify than replace, and you can alter your chain link fence in a number of ways to suit your needs. One simple modification is to add height to an existing chain link fencepost.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrenches
  • Wire cutters
  • Fencepost sleeve
  • Measuring tape
  • Spot welder or drill
  • Screws (optional)
  • Come-a-long puller/winch (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the chain link fabric and then the top rail from the fencepost. Remove the chain link fabric by loosening the hardware holding it in place and slipping it out of the hooks. If the fence has a tension wire, cut it. Once the fabric and tension wire are removed, the top rail and caps, if applicable, should come off fairly easily. Set all of these items aside, and put the hardware somewhere safe.

Cut a fencepost sleeve to go over the existing post. Overlap the sleeve by 1 foot, and attach it by spot welding or installing a screw through the post and sleeve. If you need to reinstall any caps, slip a piece of the same material the post is made of inside the sleeve, and attach the new piece with either a spot weld or screw.

Reinstall the top rail and caps, if applicable, by sliding them into place. If the fence has a tension wire instead of a top rail, put the wire in place, and stretch it using a come-a-long puller/winch.

Install the chain link fabric. Because the post is taller, you may need to install a taller chain link fabric. Attach the fabric at one end of the fence, and then roll it out to the other end of the fence. Pull out the slack in the chain link fabric either by hand or with a come-a-long puller/winch. Attach the fabric to the other end of the fence.
