How to Tint Grout

Concrete mortar is usually a pale gray color. This color might contrast poorly with colored pavers, which can make the grout stand out and become an unwanted focal point of an otherwise great walkway or patio. To prevent this, you can change the color of your grout by tinting it before you install it. This will help you color-match your grout to the pavers that you put down.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour a bag of ready-mix grout into a wheelbarrow. Ready-mix grout already has the stone and sand mixed in with the mortar. You can use a traditional concrete or mortar, but for those you need to mix the stone and sand into the mortar yourself.

Pour in the appropriate amount of pigment. The exact amount varies depending on the brand of pigment you purchase. A standard bag of ready-mix grout is 5 lbs. With a 5-lb. bag of grout, you must add 0.6898 lbs of powdered concrete pigment.

Add the appropriate amount of water to activate the grout. This also varies depending on the type of grout you purchase. The label on the packaging tells you how much to add. A garden hose and a measuring cup allow you to add the exact amount of water.

Mix the mortar with the pigment with a trowel until the mortar is a consistent color.
