How to Add a Lattice Cover to a Deck

Providing a taste of the outdoors, a deck is your gathering place, grilling spot and showpiece. If you need more privacy, though, lattice will provide some protection while maintaining an open air feel. Thin, crossed strips of wood or plastic that form a sheet of lattice also provide a place for your vines to climb, creating a floral showpiece where you can relax and retain your all-important privacy.

  • Circular saw
  • Galvanized screws
  • Drill with Phillips bit

Instructions

    • 1

Attach a 2-by-2-inch board (8 feet long) to the outside edge of each corner post on your deck, using 3 1/2-inch galvanized wood screws. Stand the boards so they run vertically along each post, following it from the top of the deck upward. Place a screw every 6 inches to hold the boards in place.

    • 2

Choose a deck post where you just mounted a board. Connect the top of that board with the top of the board you mounted directly across, using horizontal 2-by-2 boards. Cut the boards with your circular saw to make the frames square. Drive a screw into the juncture of horizontal and vertical boards, using the Phillips bit on your drill. Connect each pair of boards from the house outward to complete the frames.

    • 3

Connect the frames with lattice. Hold a piece of lattice up to the frames on the outside edge of your deck. Drive a 6d galvanized finishing nail every 8 inches to hold the lattice in place. Cut each sheet of lattice with your circular saw to fit between the frames. Cover each side of the deck with lattice, leaving only the house side and outer entrance of the deck open.

    • 4

Complete the lattice covering by attaching sheets of lattice between the top beams of your framework. Cut each sheet after it is installed to get the seams as close as possible. Drive 6d galvanized finish nails every 6 inches along the edges to hold the lattice in place. Flush the heads of each nail with the outer face of the wood.

    • 5

Cover each seam with a 1/4-by-2-inch wooden strip (8 feet long) to improve the appearance of the covering while protecting the edges of the lattice. Drive a 6d galvanized nail through the strip and into the board beneath the lattice to bind the structure together. Make the head of each nail flush. Cover the seams above the seams on top of the structure to protect the edges of those pieces of lattice.
