Composite Decking Options

Composite decking is increasing in popularity as people who want outdoor decks search for an alternative to the sanding, staining and sealing that traditional wood decks require. Composite decking options include hollow and solid composites, PVC, polyethelene and polypropylene materials. These options all have the advantage of being low-maintenance and environmentally friendly.
  1. Solid Composite

    • Composite decking materials are a mixture of plastic and wood fibers. Most brands of composite materials come in a variety of colors, and some are available in different textures. Decks made from solid composite materials have a more natural appearance and look more like natural wood. They are heavier and sturdier and less likely to be damaged during installation than hollow composites. However, solid composite decks are more prone to expansion and contraction caused by the temperature changes in various climates.

    Hollow Composite

    • Hollow composite decking materials can be the best choice for climates where seasonal expansion and contraction is a concern. Hollow composite decks are more prone to damage during and after installation, but they are lighter weight and can be easier to install than solid composites. Hollow composite decks do not have the real-wood look that some solid composite materials have. Both solid and hollow composite decks have the advantage of being easy to care for and low maintenance once they are installed properly.

    Plastic

    • Plastic is a composite option for attractive and functional decks. Options for plastic decks include PVC, polyethelene and polypropylene. Some plastic decking materials are reinforced with fiberglass or other materials to make them stronger, since they can be prone to sagging. Plastic decking is not designed to be stained and tends to be more resistant to mold and spots than wood or other composite materials. However, plastic decks can be slippery and do not look like a traditional wood deck. Some plastic decking materials are made from recycled materials while others can be recycled themselves.

    Factors to Consider

    • If you are considering installing a composite deck, the best thing that you can do is to see the materials in person. Go to a home show or showroom and look at each type of decking material. Think about what level of maintenance you are willing to perform and which features of a deck are most important to you. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of various decking materials and decide which is the best fit for your situation.
