How to Sand Painted Porch Floors

After months of being subjected to weather, wear and tear, a painted porch begins to appear with chips or peeling. Since the porch is a major feature in the front of the home, it's important to make sure it looks fresh and appealing to complement the rest of the landscape and exterior of the home. Sanding the porch is a simple way to remove old paint and prepare it for a fresh coat. Restoring the look of your porch only takes a few materials and a short amount of time.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand down the rough wood surface and large amounts of peeling paint first using 36- to 60-grit sandpaper. Move the sander in the direction of the wood grain, according to the House Painting Info website, to prevent excess damage to the wood. Apply a light pressure to remove just the paint and not remove too much of the wood's surface.

    • 2

Smooth out the wood after removing the initial coat of paint using 80- to 100-grit sandpaper.

    • 3

Sweep or vacuum the dust off the porch thoroughly. All the dust needs to be removed before attempting to repaint or stain.

    • 4

Stain or paint the porch using the new desired color according to the manufacturer's instructions.
