Ways to Cover Patios

Homeowners use patios to entertain guests or relax in the back yard on a nice day. But if the weather is too hot, and the sun is shining directly on the patio, it can be almost impossible to comfortably use your backyard entertainment area. There are ways to cover a patio that will allow you to use your patio any time you want.
  1. Arbor

    • The concept of an arbor for a patio is much like a wooden arch for a walkway, according to the Patio Ideas Guide website. The frame of an arbor is a much like a roof, but it is missing every other board to create regular openings. The arbor is attractive and effective at keeping out the sun, but it also has an added feature. You can plant vine-growing plants on your arbor to block out more of the sun and add some color to your backyard.

    Patio Roof

    • A patio roof can be free-standing or attached to your home. The important thing to remember about a patio roof is that it needs to be anchored with concrete footings to prevent it from sinking into the ground over time. If the patio roof is connected to your home, and it begins sinking because of insufficient footing foundations, it will begin to damage your home. Concrete footings also help the patio roof withstand high winds and strong rain as well.

    Awning

    • Some people do not like installing a patio roof because they want to be able to open up the patio on days when the heat is not so unbearable. If you would like a retractable patio roof, the best solution is to install an awning. Purchase an awning kit from your local home improvement store that can be installed on the back of your home. The awning can be extended when you need it, and rolled back and stored when you do not.

    Trees

    • Another way to provide permanent patio shade is to plant trees near your patio. The kind of trees you will use depend on what can grow in your area. Contact a local nursery to see what kind of trees with broad branches you can put in your back yard. Be careful not to plant the trees too close to your patio as the roots can sometimes grow under your patio and cause damage.
